Walk into almost any restaurant, beach bar, or resort in Zanzibar and you will find the same scene: a staff member juggling a paper pad, a calculator app on their phone, and a WhatsApp message to the kitchen. In 2026, most of Zanzibar’s hospitality venues still run on systems that were never designed for this island.
ZanziPOS exists to change that. Not by adapting a European SaaS platform with African features bolted on — but by building from zero, with Zanzibar as the only reference point.
When venue owners in Zanzibar search for a POS system, they find tools built for restaurants in London, Dubai, or Nairobi. These systems share a common set of problems when deployed here. There is no TZS support, so prices must be entered in USD or EUR with manual conversion. There is no ZRA integration, meaning fiscal receipts must be generated on a separate device. Mobile money requires a workaround or a separate terminal. When something breaks at 8pm on a Friday, the support team is in a different time zone. And systems assume a stable broadband connection, not Zanzibar’s variable mobile data.
The result is that most venue owners either pay for a system they cannot fully use, or they give up on digital tools entirely and go back to paper.
ZanziPOS is a multi-tenant SaaS platform. Each venue gets their own secure subdomain, their own isolated database, and their own configuration. Prices are set in TZS or USD natively. Every completed order automatically submits to the Zanzibar Revenue Authority API and returns a ZRA receipt number. Cash and room bill work out of the box with no gateway required. The POS runs on any device — a waiter’s Android phone, a tablet at the bar, or a laptop at the front desk. No app to install, no hardware to buy.
The interface is also designed for high contrast visibility on phone screens in direct Zanzibar sunshine — something no imported system has ever considered.
Speed is the most important thing in a working POS. A waiter at a busy beach bar does not have time to navigate three menus to add a grilled octopus to an order. ZanziPOS is designed around a single principle: an order should be completable in under 10 seconds.
The POS opens on the Tables view. Staff tap a table, the menu opens instantly, they tap items to add them, and hit Checkout. Payment method, optional customer email for a digital receipt, confirm. The table is freed, the ZRA receipt is generated — all in one flow. For walk-in customers, Quick Sale skips the table selection entirely. For complex bills, Split Payment lets the customer pay part cash and part mobile money in seconds.
Behind the POS, every venue has a full admin panel accessible from any browser. Menu management, table setup, staff roles and passwords, ZRA configuration, ZRA queue monitoring, daily sales reports, payment breakdown by method, best-selling items, and an AI assistant powered by Claude — all in one place, with no technical knowledge required.
The AI assistant can answer venue-specific questions based on your actual order history: what were my top 5 items this week, which table generates the most revenue, what is my busiest hour?
ZanziPOS is in active development. The roadmap includes a Kitchen Display System so kitchen staff see orders appear in real time, offline PWA mode for venues with unreliable connectivity, a loyalty points system, reservations and table bookings, and room service QR ordering for hotels. Every feature on the roadmap was requested by Zanzibar venue owners. This is built here, by a team that lives and works in Fumba Town, Zanzibar.
